With the internet and technology advancing at a faster rate than ever before, this has allowed us all an opportunity to start an online business and try to make it in the world. Though the ‘getting started’ phase is easy, a significant number of people don’t make it past this phase because they don’t know what to do next. Luckily, we’re here to help with five important steps.
Step #1: Plan, Plan, Plan – Before you do anything, you need to sit down and think about a few factors. Often, we get so excited that we start building a business without knowing where we want to go, how we’re going to get there, and how to scale the business once we start to see success. Therefore, these should be your opening questions before then creating a profile of your average customer and building a base of knowledge you can refer back to at any given point in time.
Step #2: Build Your Offering – Once the plan is in place, the next step is to build your brand and, before you skip to the next step if you already have a website, you need more than a website. Nowadays, you need to be available across the internet and this includes social media as well as professional platforms like LinkedIn. With profiles in every corner, it adds to your credibility and people are more confident in choosing your business.
Not only do you need these profiles, you need to contribute to them every so often to draw the followers. If you have limited resources currently, try to work out an effective schedule for each or only use the most important platforms for your niche.
Step #3: Create Content – The ecommerce services experts Comalytics told us that in 2017 and in the years to come, there’s no greater content than photos and videos because they grab the attention, they activate more senses and brain activity than just reading, and they evoke an emotion. Therefore, we highly recommend getting creative in the coming weeks and months. Even if it’s a video showing how to use your products or showing behind-the-scenes at a conference, videos make your business more personable and you become a more attractive solution.
Step #4: Assess the Analytics – Over time, your business will see more interest and your ad campaigns will start to draw people inwards. During these times, it’s essential to look at the analytics of your website and social media. Starting with your website, you can see which pages get the most interaction and which don’t. If there’s a certain page where people seem to click away, this needs fixing. If there’s an abnormal number of potential customers abandoning shopping carts, your checkout process needs to be simplified.
After your website, you also need to check analytics for the engagement on social media. If certain tweets and Facebook posts are seeing more interaction than others, you know where to focus your attentions in the coming weeks.
Step #5: Be Willing to Grow – Although this sounds obvious (because we all want growth, right?), many online businesses aren’t in a position to scale up but you need to be ready from the first moment. For example, you should automate as many systems as possible, create a mailing list, outsource tasks that can be done elsewhere so you can focus on the most important tasks, etc.
If you follow the first four steps and are then willing to grow when everything comes to fruition, you’ll see success. Of course, your products and services also need to grow so they’re right for the industry and the best they could possibly be!
